Although I describe my work as fiber art, amidst the textiles in my studio are collections of shells, buttons, hardware, beads, lace, feathers, and numerous miscellaneous items that refuse to be neatly categorized. This is my treasure trove, discovered in antique shops and hardware stores, on beaches and on-line, in friends' and family's caches, in fabric stores from designer to discount. I "hunt and gather." Some objects resonate with my sense of delight. Some, worn and damaged, are chosen for the story they tell. Some simply please my eye. All invite touch. My fingertips want to feel their hues, surfaces, and patterns.
We add meaning to our lives as we sift through memories and experiences to find connections and a narrative What we choose to group together brings context and perspective. As I examine and assemble incongruous bits and pieces, the same process happens. Meanings shift and weave together. Like memories, there are layers and complexity, shadows and unveilings. Construction is purposely oblique and implausible. Objects rest, seemingly unattached. There is a possibility of further developments.
